Mo Lowda & the Humble and the crowd at Royale

Mo Lowda & the Humble

A second sighting of the Philly-based indie-rock band, surely not my last.

At Royale in Boston on October 17, Mo Lowda & the Humble delivered the kind of performance that makes a second run-in with a band worthwhile. I first saw them in Stowe, Vermont, but the larger room and clearer sound at Royale revealed a different side of their live show. The scene was perhaps less intimate than I had encountered before, but well worth the visit.

Surf Hat opened the evening. Before the show, my familiarity with Surf largely began and ended with “Bowling Alley Thug,” which made the rest of the set a genuine introduction. I probably should go scour the rest of their discography.

For ML&H, the transitions were especially strong. Instead of allowing one song to end completely before beginning the next, Jordan Caiola, Jeff Lucci, and Kirby Sybert passed riffs among one another while drummer Shane Woods kept the beat going. The result was a set that felt continuous, with no gaps of awkward silence that fell on our ears.

The main floor at Royale was fairly full. The concentrated crowd gave the room a bit of a cheery vibe, with many couples, solo-goers, and a few groups. The audience did seem to be filled with people who were true fans of the band, singing along with nearly every lyric.

The production complemented the performance. A rather simple look with music-synced light bulbs occupying the foreground. Shane was admittedly kind of tucked away in the back, however, making moments to catch him in the light a little more difficult. The mix left enough space to hear how the four musicians interacted, particularly during the instrumental passages.

This would definitely be worth a repeat visit :) can't wait to catch them at their next show… Stowe round 2?
